How to Build and Maintain a Relationship With Your Social Media Audience

The Internet is not only a breeding ground for amazing conversation and content, but it has literally become a breeding ground for those looking for love. Who would have thought that the Internet would become so personal? However, this is good news for your brand. This means that your customers are open to creating a personal relationship with your brand’s social media and digital persona. Creating chemistry with your target audience on social channels has become paramount, but have no fear, Engage the Love Doctor is here to help establish and maintain working relationships with your target audience.

  • Put the ball in YOUR court. As with every budding relationship, it is important to start your union by getting to know who you’re talking to. Ask them questions and get their opinions. Don’t leave it to them to make the effort; be the man in the relationship and make the first move. Knowing your audience’s age, geography, income, and education isn’t enough. Learn their interests and aspirations, as well as other psychographic information. This information will help your organization plan a social media strategy that will engage current followers and draw in prospectives.
  • If your target audience likes flowers, bring it flowers! Always give your target audience what they want, not what they need. Like social media posts, relationships can get boring if they become too monotonous--give your audience relevant and visual information filled with contests and other engaging activities. Your audience doesn't always want facts and figures, so change up your posts every once in a while--I’m not saying you should drop all factual information, just try packaging it in a more engaging way. Cater your social media presence to fit your audience’s lifestyle by keeping posts shorter in length for reading-on-the-go. If you don’t continue to fuel your social-media relationship’s fire, then your relationship will quickly die.
  • Show your audience a good time. Your audience is busy. Don’t be just another thing to read on their newsfeed, make them go out of their way to view your page. Design interactive social series that stick with your brand’s voice. Give your audience something to laugh and cry about--give them something to connect with. Get as creative as possible and monitor your results to see what your audience enjoyed and what you can cut from your social media strategy.
  • Always be yourself. As with any relationship, you should never be anything but yourself. Your audience follows you because they appreciate your brand’s voice and presence. If your brand is sarcastic and a bit snarky--then be sarcastic and snarky. Every social media post should be composed with your brand’s voice in mind.

While creating social media chemistry is the first step, a social media relationship requires time and effort, but if you use the above tips and stay consistent with your social media efforts, your audience will continue to follow you for richer or poorer. Until next time, I’ll see you on the Web! XOXO

Oh, the Power of Social Media: From Hero to 0 in 2 Tweets

As you all may know, the US men's national soccer team celebrated an impressive victory against the Ghana national team in their opening World Cup match on June 16th. Like many proud US natives, Delta Airlines wanted to post a congratulatory tweet about the team’s victory while still paying homage to their competitors--but what they did has instead lead to nothing but criticism and offensive allegations regarding the company’s competency, ethical standards, and views. The infamous tweet displayed 2 images, one of the statue of liberty at sunset with a large 2 centered in the middle, covering nothing but open sky. The image to its right displayed a giraffe, strategically placed to the far right side of the image so that the white number 1 would contrast against the purple sky in the background. For those of you who did not have the pleasure of watching the game, the numbers indicated the score. The tweet read: Congrats team #USA! Nice goal @clint_dempsey @soundersfc! #USAvGHA #USMNT #DeltaSEA.

For those of you who don’t have a grasp of the situation now, the giraffe image indicates a total disassociation with the opposing team’s country of origin. Yes, giraffes live in Africa, and Ghana is located in Africa, but Ghana is located on the western coast, a region where giraffes do not thrive. Twitter users around the world voiced their distaste for the tweet, calling it ignorant, patronizing, and racist. Due to the mass hysteria that erupted from the social networkers on Twitter, Delta quickly removed the tweet, replacing it with an apology… of sorts: We’re sorry for our choice of photo in our precious tweet. Best of luck to all teams playing in the World Cup.

While it’s encouraged to have timely/real-time social posts that support current or world events, it’s ALWAYS important to do research first. It’s better to release a tweet 10 minutes later and ensure that everything is accurate. If you do happen to post an incorrect tweet, make sure that you double, triple, and quadruple check all spelling and grammar on the new tweet. While the “our precious tweet” was deleted and replaced with “our previous tweet” only minutes after it was posted, its presence has still inflicted a lasting and irreparable wound on the Delta name.

Real-time marketing is a great social media strategy, just do your homework first. Professional marketers recommend having 70% of your marketing effort planned while only leaving 30% open to real-time information. Don’t rush, take your time and ensure you have valid and correct information. Also, in certain situations, like this one, you could have two wonderfully researched and grammatically correct tweets precomposed. The one that gets posted depends on the outcome of the game. Not all situations are as reactive as they may appear, make your posts more proactive and always do extensive research--especially if the topic addresses a topic of interest to an audience on a global scale.

Until next time, I’ll see you on the Web! XOXO

Social Media Cheat Codes to Help You Destroy the Competition

Social Media Cheat Codes to Help You Destroy the CompetitionEvery Wednesday, Captain America and I like to get together for a friendly evening of gambling, gaming and gore! That’s right--I’m talking about a videogame battle between yours truly and the American poster boy--or should I say, poster PUNK. What’s on the itinerary? Injustice, the superhero player vs. player combat game. The Captain is an honest man, and he always wonders why I always have the upperhand in virtual battle. Two words: Cheat codes. I always unlock my avatars’ amazing abilities so they’re fighting at peak performance. It’s not cheating, it’s strategy--and it works.

Cheat codes don’t only apply to video games, however. There are cheat codes for social media as well. Social media can inform, engage and motivate your viewers to bring their traffic to your digital doorstep. However, not everyone is using this wonderful source to its full potential, and some are not obtaining the ROI that they desire. I’m here to help you unlock your full social potential with some social media cheat codes.

    •    Facebook Cheat Codes:

◦    Link Thumbnail Images (→ - X - LT - RT - Y) - Use Facebook's recent changes to your advantage by linking your thumbnail to a site. Facebook will scour the site for the image with the largest dimension, and that’s the image that will appear. This will give you a high click through and more eyes will see your content. ◦    Call-to-Action Button (↑ - ↓ - ↓ - A - A) - Activate the Call-to-Action button to increase traffic and add UTM parameters to track traffic.

 •    Twitter Cheat Codes:

◦    Twitter Pinned Tweets (→ - B - A - A - LT) - Highlight and pin your key tweets to your profile! Have your organization's goals on permanent display so followers can see what makes you special. ◦    Twitter Summary Card (LT - LT - RT - B - B) - Twitter summary cards allow you to customize your posts and decide how your audience will see them. There are three types of cards: photo card, player card, and summary card.

    •    Google+ Cheat Codes:

◦    Markdown Styling (← - ↓ - RT - → - X) - Markdown style is the non-techy way of installing easy-to-read formatting. You can attract and engage your audience with simple content that is bolded, italicized or struck through for extra emphasis. ◦    Interactive Posts (→ - → - A - B - Y - Y) - Similar to the Call-to-Action button on Facebook ads, they add a “listen,” “learn more,” or “sign up” button to your shared posts.

    •    Pinterest Cheat Codes:

◦    Use Rich Pins (A - ↑ - ↓ - B - X - LT) - Rich Pins provide better user experience by presenting more content than past posts. Titles, Favicon, URL and meta descriptions are all presented with the image when using Rich Pins. ◦    Update Your Boards for the Season (A - ↑ -  → - A - LT - LT) - Don’t let your Pinterest page become stagnant, change your cover photo and consistently adapt your boards with the seasons to keep your visitors intrigued.

    •    Instagram Cheat Codes:

◦    Photo Map Labeling(↑ - ↑ - ↓ - A - RT) - If you don’t have a physical business location (or multiple locations), but still want to Geo-Tag your Instagram posts, use Photo Map Labeling. ◦    Upload to Instagram from Mac or PC(RT - LT - ↓ - ↓ - LT) - An app, called Gamblr, is available for those who want to use a nice DSLR, or other form of camera, for their Instagram photos. You no longer have to rely on a phone camera; upload your images to your PC or Mac and then use the Gamblr app to post onto Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

    •    LinkedIn Cheat Codes:

◦    Call-to-Action Images Inside Posts ( → -  → - ← -  ↓ - A) - This cheat code adds a call-to-action image to your LinkedIn deep content. The image is matched based on relevancy to the content’s topic, and these pictures will increase traffic and shares.

Implement these social media cheat codes to put your opponents to shame! I know I will the next time I meet Captain America in the social media universe--he loves to lose to me. Stay tuned for the bonus round, where I update all my followers on Captain America’s pathetic attempts at virtual combat--a.k.a. he’s going to get his but whooped by a girl. Until next time, I’ll see you on the Web! XOXO

It should be noted that typing these cheat codes into your social media profiles will accomplish nothing. They are strictly there for stylistic purposes.
